Book 2 Post 2
I dove into "Resilient: How to Grow an Unshakable Core" by Dr. Rick Hanson. The choice wasn't random, I have been wanting to read a "self-help" book for a while now but have not been able to choose one that resonates. These books always felt like they would make very general statements or contain motivational quotes that would not foster deep connections with my life. But with this assignment, I decided to give it a shot. At a time of major transition in life, I had hoped this book would be an anchor, teaching me how to stand firm despite any challenges. I was looking for something to not just read but to perhaps internalize and learn from.
What I hoped for and what I actually got were surprisingly aligned. Dr. Hanson didn't just meet my expectations, he expanded them. The book is like a toolbox for the mind, packed with strategies grounded in neuroscience to help foster inner strength. One quote that really stuck with me was, "Resilience is not about avoiding the waves; it's about learning to surf." This line encapsulates the essence of the book—it's not about escaping life's challenges but about navigating them with grace and strength. It's a reminder that resilience is an active, ongoing process rather than a static state of being.
Three key takeaways from "Resilient" would be: 1) The importance of mindfulness and presence in building a resilient mindset. Hanson emphasizes that being fully present not only enhances our capacity to cope with stress but also enriches our experiences. 2) The concept of "growing" resilience through positive experiences. By savoring the good and letting positive emotions sink in, we can gradually rewire our brains to be more resilient. 3) Lastly, the significance of connection. Hanson points out that relationships and support networks are crucial to resilience, reminding us that being strong doesn't mean going it alone. These insights have shifted my perspective on resilience from a vague concept to a tangible, achievable skill set.
Hi Elmira, this is a really well written blog post and I enjoyed it a lot. I have also always wanted to read a self help book, but have never gotten into it so I am glad you were moved by the book.
